Maca-Roons!

I recently undertook a “gut rebuild” detox and somehow managed to convince my boyfriend to jump on board too. To keep him on the straight and narrow though I needed to keep things interesting and most of all tasty! The biggest challenge presented itself with a quiet date night to the movies. Going to the cinema is a great way to have a quiet night in Cayman, but how do you ignore the food cravings that are associated with and triggered by a trip to the movies?! Popcorn, Kazoozles, ice cream, M&Ms – are anyone else’s taste buds salivating?

Where was I? Oh yes, so it was going to be very difficult for B to get through the night without chewing all his nails off unless I came up with some yummy alternative to the refined sugar badness that his body was craving. So, it was whilst looking for a raw & sugar free cinema treat that I stumbled across a recipe for Maca-Roons. Not only are they sugar free but they’re quick & easy to make (no baking needed) and contain Maca powder, an ancient Peruvian superfood! Maca is said to balance hormones, boost fertility, improve mood, increase energy, boost the immune system and it’s also good for the libido 😉 B loved them and claims they have that “melt in your mouth like butter” quality. So what are you waiting for? Give them a go today!

INGREDIENTS:
Yield: Makes around 6
Preparation: 5 minutes; set in freezer for 15-20 minutes

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 5-6 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp maca powder
  • 1 tbsp plant protein powder (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs (optional)
  • cinnamon dusting

METHOD:

  1. Melt coconut oil to room temperature
  2. Combine all other ingredients and then spoon into mini cupcake moulds and place in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Dust with cinnamon & try not to eat them all in one go!

DetoxConfession time – Here’s Bri-lo and me celebrating the end of his week-long detox with a not so detox-friendly Bloody Mary (for him) & Caesar (for me). These things will put a hefty dent in your wallet so I made sure we got our money’s worth by requesting extra large cups and reminding the barman to add the shrimp garnish when it was overlooked (I’ve had enough of them to know that they ALWAYS come with a shrimp garnish!).
